Medication Allergies: Treatment

Taking a thorough history from the patient is the most valuable part of an evaluation for medication allergy.  The type of testing done is based on the patient's history of reaction(s) and the suspected medication.

In any situation where a medication is suspected of causing an adverse event, the medication should be immediately discontinued, and the patient evaluated as soon as possible.  Severe symptoms should prompt patients to seek immediate medical help.

For those patients who have a documented history of anaphylaxis following use of a medication, strict avoidance should be the practiced.
